Statement from Chair Brian King on Repealing HB267’s Bargaining Banand Opposing Republican Changes to Candidate Filing Deadlines

Let’s be clear: Republican leaders aren’t repealing HB267 out of cooperation or dialogue. They’re doing it because Utahns made it unmistakably obvious they would overturn this law at the ballot box. I join Utah’s labor community in welcoming this repeal.

Legislative leaders have proven themselves untrustworthy, and people are right not to trust them to look out for working Utahns. Speaker Schultz and President Adams want to make it seem like caring conversation, but the truth is they’re retreating after voters rejected this law.

These same leaders are using this special session to manipulate the candidate filing deadline and push a constitutional amendment that weakens Utahns’ right to vote on initiatives. When voters push back, the supermajority’s reflex is to change the rules to protect its own power. The Utah Democratic Party will continue standing with public workers and all Utahns who expect honest, accountable leadership that defends working families and public employees.
