PRESS RELEASES
Katrina Fallick-Wang Cares About Utah Families, Owens Cares About Donald Trump
October 24, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Coordinated Director Elliot Kauffman released the following statement today:
“Burgess Owens floundered in tonight’s Congressional District 4 debate. Somewhere between declaring his fanatical loyalty to Donald Trump and announcing his intention to strip Utahns of their medical freedom, Owens failed to present solutions to any of the challenges that Utahns face.
Katrina Fallick-Wang set aside culture war propaganda to talk about the things Utah families need the most: lower costs, better education, and less government interference in their daily lives. Unlike Owens, she cares about your family, not the MAGA agenda. If you want someone who will bring common sense to Capitol Hill, then vote for Katrina Fallick-Wang.”

UDP Coordinated Campaign Reaches Historic Number of Utah Voters
October 23, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah Democratic Party’s Coordinated Campaign, Organize Utah, announced today that it has reached out to over a quarter million voters since May 1, 2024, with over 60,000 conversations. From phone banking to texting to door knocking, Organize Utah is working to persuade undecided voters and get Democratic voters out to the polls. Thanks to the support of a large coalition of partners, the Utah Democratic Party is leading the charge to elect Democrats in highly competitive districts.
The Utah Democratic Party and Organize Utah have provided free resources to Democratic candidates, including campaign coaching, strategy consultation, data administration, logo design, website design, flier design, and access to a predictive dialer - making it far easier for campaigns to reach large numbers of voters over the phone. These investments have saved Democratic campaigns thousands of dollars, ensuring that they can focus on talking to voters about the issues that matter most to them.
“The Utah Democratic Party is doing more to elect state and local Democrats than it ever has before,” Coordinated Director Elliot Kauffman said. “Already, we’ve reached out to over twice as many voters than the Utah Democratic Party did in 2020 or 2022. For too long, Republican politicians have taken our state for granted, as they gave themselves legislative districts that made it easy for them to stay in power. Despite GOP gerrymandering, we are working harder than ever before to ensure Utahns’ voices are heard, and that Democrats get elected to state and local office.”

UDP Releases Game-Changing Ad: Republicans Have Gone Too Far
October 18, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, the Utah Democratic Party released a 30-second ad holding Republican politicians accountable for putting Utah children in danger by failing to address our air quality, trying to control women’s reproductive health care even though they think women can control their ‘intake of semen,’ and for trying to trick Utahns into giving up their ability to hold corrupt politicians accountable through ballot initiatives.
“Over 60% of Utahns think the state is going in the wrong direction,” Utah Democratic Party Coordinated Director Elliot Kauffman said. “When something isn’t working, it’s time to get rid of the party in charge. Republican politicians have left Utah families behind in their pursuit of control over our personal lives. Our new ad will remind people why they should vote for state and local Democrats: because we don’t need corrupt politicians taking away our freedoms.”

Glenn Wright Isn’t Wrong: Mike Kennedy Wants To Make Decisions For Utah Families
October 17, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Coordinated Director Elliot Kauffman released the following statement today:
“Mike Kennedy wants the government to make medical decisions for Utah families. Mike Kennedy spent his career in the state legislature going after Utahns’ medical freedom while Utahns struggled with high housing costs, poor air quality, and underfunded public schools. Glenn Wright knows the truth: Republican politicians have no place in Utahns’ doctors offices and exam rooms. In his work as a Summit County Councilmember, Glenn Wright voted in favor of affordable housing. As a veteran, Glenn Wright has demonstrated his commitment to our country. Meanwhile, Mike Kennedy is only interested in taking power away from Utahns and giving it to himself.
Unlike Mike Kennedy, Glenn Wright has a commitment to freedom. Unlike Mike Kennedy, Glenn Wright is prioritizing common sense solutions on the issues that matter most to Utahns. Unlike Mike Kennedy, Glenn Wright wants to get things done, not waste Utahns’ time and tax dollars on pointless culture wars. Tonight’s debate showed that if you want to defend your personal freedom and have a government that will fix problems rather than create them, then Glenn Wright is your candidate.”

Meet MAGA Mike: The “Moderate” GOP Candidate Who Associates With Conspiracy Theorists and Gay-Bashers
October 11, 2024, Salt Lake City - Mike Bird, the Republican Candidate for Utah House District 35, claims to have a “people over party approach” to politics - but his record tells a different story. As a candidate for the Chair of the Utah Republican Party, Mike Bird campaigned on promoting the party’s platform, stating in an interview with MAGA extremist John Johnson, “one of the things that unifies our party in general is our platform.”
Let’s take a look at what the Utah GOP platform calls for:
A near-total ban on abortion:
“We oppose abortion… and the public funding of any of these abhorrent practices.”
Opposing Equal Rights for Women and LGBTQ+ People:
“We believe that no individual is entitled to rights that exceed or supersede the God-given individual rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Utah.”
Suspending Birthright Citizenship, in violation of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution
“We support suspending automatic U.S. citizenship to children born to illegal immigrant parents.”
Adding insult to injury, Mike Bird has promoted MAGA extremists like Mike Lee, who voted against federal recognition for gay marriages and once said voters should think of Donald Trump like “Captain Moroni,” Kera Birkeland, who sponsored laws restricting abortion access and forcing the state government to police who uses what bathroom, and Dinesh D’Souza, who was convicted of campaign finance fraud, mocked school shooting survivors, outed gay students, and promoted the racist conspiracy theory that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.
“Mike Bird’s shameless association with gay-bashing politicians and conspiracy theorists proves that he is not the moderate he pretends to be,” UDP Vice-Chair Oscar Mata said. “It’s time for voters to meet the real Mike Bird: ‘MAGA Mike.’ I call on Mike Bird to clarify his position on abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, and explain why he is so comfortable around MAGA politicians and gay-bashing conspiracy theorists.”

Caroline Gleich Crushes Curtis In US Senate Debate
October 10, 2024 - Organize Utah Coordinated Director Elliot Kauffman released the following statement today:
“Caroline Gleich is the clear winner of tonight’s US Senate Debate. John Curtis failed to explain why he betrayed our nation’s veterans by voting against the PACT act, or why his Conservative Climate Caucus has failed to produce any meaningful action on climate change, or why he continues to oppose reproductive healthcare even though he claimed he doesn’t want male politicians making decisions about women’s bodies.
Caroline, meanwhile, showed that she’s answering Mitt Romney’s call for a ‘new generation of leaders.’ She understands the issues that Utah families face, and as a mountaineer, she has the grit and determination to put Utah on the right track.
Caroline is a person of conviction, and though she may not look like your average US Senator, she is the person our families need representing them on Capitol Hill. Unlike John Curtis, Caroline Gleich will ensure that young people can afford to live near their parents, that children have clean air to breathe, and that women are free from government interference in their personal medical decisions.”

It’s Time For The Republican Supermajority To Stop Playing Political Games With Our Children’s Future
October 9, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis and Salt Lake County Democratic Party Chair Jade Velazquez released the following joint statement today:
“Today’s court ruling on Amendment A is a victory for teachers, students, and their families. For years, the Republican Supermajority has refused to remove the state sales tax on groceries, keeping food costs artificially high for Utah families.
This year, they finally promised to remove the state sales tax on food - but only if Utahns voted to gut public education funding, effectively holding our children’s future hostage. Adding insult to injury, they did not publish the text of the proposed constitutional amendment to local newspapers, as they are constitutionally required to do.
All Utah children deserve the best schools possible. They deserve highly-paid, well-trained teachers. They deserve the opportunity to compete for the best colleges, careers, and trades in the nation. It is time for the Republican Supermajority to stop playing political games with the future of our children and grandchildren.”

Blake Moore Won’t Make The Change CD1 Needs
October 8, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Vice-Chair Oscar Mata released the following statement today:
“Tonight, Congressman Blake Moore tried to dodge accountability for his failure to deliver for Utahns. From voting against providing critical medical help to veterans to failing to address Utah’s high cost of living, Blake Moore has abandoned his constituents. Right out the gate, he rambled about debate rules. Rather than propose real solutions, Moore railed against President Biden’s agenda. He tried to defend his double-dealing on immigration, when the truth is Congressional Republicans blocked a bipartisan immigration reform bill because Donald Trump told them to.
Meanwhile, Bill Campbell showed himself to be a voice for Utahns over special interests. His priority is you. I call on residents of Congressional District One to vote for Bill Campbell and other Democrats all the way down the ballot, so they can get the representation they deserve.”

Utah Democrats Condemn Nomination of Corrupt Politician Bruce Adams
October 8, 2024, Salt Lake City - Yesterday, San Juan County Commissioner Bruce Adams’ nomination to the Utah State Transportation Commission was approved in a party-line vote by the Utah Senate Transportation Confirmation Committee.
In 2022, Adams, who was nominated by Republican Governor Spencer Cox, attempted to use his political position as a County Commissioner to intimidate a police officer into freeing Adams’ son, who was arrested on suspicion of violating the terms of his probation. Adams also wrote that environmentalists were the “greatest threat” to the nation.
Senator Nate Blouin, one of two Democrats who voted against the approval of Adams’ nomination, said “Public service is a privilege and should not be taken lightly. I’m disappointed in the appointment of Commissioner Bruce Adams to serve on Utah’s Transportation Committee, where he will make decisions impacting every corner of the state. By appointing Adams to the commission, Governor Cox has shown he values political favoritism over civility and that he’ll reward allies with important posts, even if it means elevating someone who misused their office to benefit a family member.”
“Every Utahn agrees that our government should be free from corruption,” Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis said. “For Spencer Cox to appoint someone who has already used political power to attempt to thwart law enforcement is a sign that he cares more about scoring political points with anti-environmental extremists than keeping corrupt politicians out of our state government. I encourage Utahns to call their state senator and encourage them to vote against Adams’ confirmation when it comes before the full senate.”

Utah Democrats Celebrate Leader Escamilla With Eleanor Roosevelt Award
October 7, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, Utah Democrats and their allies gathered at the Cleone Peterson Eccles Alumni House for the annual Eleanor Roosevelt Luncheon, celebrating Democratic women who embody Eleanor Roosevelt’s legacy of leadership and political advocacy.
This year’s Eleanor Roosevelt award was presented by the 2023 awardee, former Utah House Minority Leader Jennifer Seeling to Utah Senate Minority Leader Luz Escamilla.
“Leader Escamilla has been a tireless champion for marginalized communities,” Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis said. “In her four terms as a state senator, Leader Escamilla has worked to raise the quality of life for all Utahns, regardless of race, gender, or income. Leader Escamilla joins our past awardees as one of the greatest women to serve in Utah Democratic politics.”
Previous Eleanor Roosevelt awardees include: Beverly White, Beverly Saathoff, Lucy Beth Rampton, ShaRon Nelson, Helen James, Louise Henson, Fae Beck, Norma Matheson, Rosa Vida Black, Jan Graham, Judy Ann Buffmire, Karen Shepherd, Esther Landa, Paula Julander, Robyn Matheson, Annette Cumming, Karen Hale, Susan Kuziak, Karen Mayne, Sherrie Swensen, Patrice Arent, The Women’s Democratic Club, Meghan Holbrook, Patricia Jones, JoAnn Seghini, Jill Remington Love, Carol Spackman Moss, Rebecca Chavez-Houck, Josie Valdez, Jenny Wilson, Leslie Reberg, Gwen Springmeyer, Jani Iwamoto, and Jennifer Seelig.

Utah Democratic Party Mourns Former Utah House & Senate Minority Leader Mike Dmitrich
October 3, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“Leader Mike Dmitrich was a staunch advocate for labor and public education. The last Democratic State Senator to win a district south of Salt Lake County, Leader Dmitrich showed that Democratic representation benefits all Utahns, no matter what part of the state they’re from. His 40-year legislative career is an inspiration to Democrats everywhere. My thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.”

Tim Walz Proved That JD Vance Should’ve Stayed On His Couch
October 1, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“Tonight, JD Vance showed his weird obsession with our personal lives. While he scrambled to make up for Donald Trump’s disastrous debate performance, he attacked many of the freedoms Americans hold dear - including the freedom to make decisions about our bodies, and the freedom to elect our leaders in fair and free elections.
Tim Walz was the clear winner of tonight’s debate, as he showed that he wants to make life better for American families. From working as a public school teacher and football coach to his pro-family policy accomplishments as Governor of Minnesota, Walz has a dedication to public service that stands in stark contrast to JD Vance’s mania for putting Donald Trump back in power. Unlike the Project 2025 Agenda that Vance and Trump are promoting, the Harris-Walz Agenda will reduce costs for families and protect their lives from government interference.
I can confidently say that Tim Walz is trustworthy enough to be one heartbeat away from the Oval Office. I wouldn’t trust JD Vance with my couch, much less the power of the Vice-Presidency.”

Utah GOP Asks LDS Volunteers to Choose Between Faith and Politics
September 25, 2024, Salt Lake City - UDP Vice-Chair Oscar Mata released the following statement today:
“I am deeply disappointed in the Utah GOP’s decision to recruit volunteers to canvass for Donald Trump over General Conference weekend. As a member of the LDS church myself, I find it disrespectful to ask LDS volunteers to choose between an important faith event and politics. Unlike the Utah GOP, the Utah Democratic Party is scheduling our canvasses and phone banks around General Conference sessions to accommodate our LDS supporters.
It’s clear that Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies are worried about losing the LDS vote. From being found liable for sexual assault in civil court to his policy of separating children from their parents at the border, Donald Trump does not embody the values of being ‘honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men,’ as the 13th Article of Faith says.
If you are an LDS voter who feels that the party of Donald Trump has no place for you, then I invite you to learn more about Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party. Unlike MAGA Republicans, we are working to elect honest candidates who support policies that actually benefit families.”

Amendment D Is Still Dead
September 25, 2024, Salt Lake City - UDP Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today.
“The Republican Supermajority overrode the will of the people by ignoring the 2018 Better Boundaries Initiative. When the Courts held that the Supermajority could not ignore Utahns’ wishes, the Supermajority put an intentionally deceitful constitutional amendment on the ballot, hand-crafted to take away voter power and give it to political elites. Today’s Supreme Court Decision ensures that voters can make their voices heard, despite all the Republican Supermajority’s attempts to trick Utahns into giving away their power.
However, the Republicans who tried to trick voters are still in power. They do not like being proven wrong, and they will lash out - as always, it will be the people of Utah who suffer. Utah needs leaders who listen to voters, and the only way to make that happen is by voting the corrupt MAGA Republicans who ignore what Utahns need out of office.”

Utah Democrats Condemn Intimidation of Election Workers
September 20, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement in response to the FBI’s interception of a threatening letter and white powder intended for the Utah Lieutenant Governor’s Office, which oversees elections in the state of Utah:
“I wholeheartedly condemn this attempt to intimidate Utah’s Election Workers. The professionals who handle our votes are integral to the democratic process, and threats made against election workers undermine the foundations of our democracy. I am grateful that those at the Lieutenant Governor’s Office are safe, and that United States Postal Workers and the FBI were able to address the situation.
The culture of political intimidation, stoked by Donald Trump and his cronies, must end. Election-denying conspiracy theories put us all at risk, and I call on people of all political affiliations to condemn those who spread them.”

Corrupt Republican Politicians Refuse To Take Accountability For Caucus Night Cover-Up
September 18, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, Utah Democratic Party Vice-Chair Oscar Mata accepted an invitation to present to the Utah Legislature’s Government Operations Interim Committee, and traveled to the Utah State Capitol to defend the right of every Utahn to cast their vote in a Presidential Primary.
However, the Republican Supermajority voted to block any discussion of how their party restricted access to the ballot box - the second time in as many months that the Republican Party has dodged accountability for refusing to allow Republican voters to participate in a secure, mail-in, presidential primary.
Less than 10% of Utah Republicans were able to cast their ballots in the Republican presidential contest. Meanwhile, nearly 30% of Active, Registered Democrats were able to cast their votes in the secure, mail-in Democratic primary. That the turnout rate in the Republican presidential contest was comparatively so low, despite the fact that the Republican presidential contest was much more competitive than the Democratic presidential contest, suggests that many Utah Republican voters were either unwilling or unable to participate in the mishandled Republican Caucus.
“If Republicans hadn’t voted to continue their Caucus Night Cover-Up,” UDP Vice-Chair Oscar Mata said, “I would have told them that every Utahn deserves to have their vote counted by professional election officials rather than partisan leaders. The decision by Republican Politicians to protect themselves from facing accountability for disenfranchising their own party members is unacceptable, and frankly, reeks of corruption.”

Voters can also pledge to vote and, as we approach the election, make a plan to vote. Voters can also find the phone number for the DNC Voter Assistance Hotline on this website.
Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“We can’t wait on the Republican Supermajority to fix housing costs or lower the cost of living. If you think that Utah’s government is headed in the wrong direction, now is the time to make a change. I encourage all Utahns to take advantage of utahdemocrats.org/vote, because the first step to electing the leadership that Utahns deserve is registering to vote and learning about the Democrats running to represent you.”
