Judge Shuts Down Republican Supermajority’s Elitist Power-Grab
September 11, 2024, Salt Lake City - UDP Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“Today’s ruling is a victory for Utahns. It confirms that the Republican Supermajority’s attempt to take away the power of the voters and give it to political elites was as poorly planned as it was corrupt. Our system of checks and balances is functioning exactly as the framers of our state’s constitution intended it to - protecting voters from misleading ballot language hand-crafted by the MAGA extremists who run the Republican Supermajority.
However, the Republican Supermajority’s pattern of bad behavior proves that they will not accept this ruling. There is nothing to stop them from trying to take away voters’ rights in another year. The only way to guarantee an end to the Republican Supermajority’s corrupt power-grabs is by voting them out.”

Utah Democrats Cheer Brian King’s Victory Over Infamous Flip-Flopper Spencer Cox
September 11, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Executive Director Thom DeSirant released the following statement tonight.
“62% of Utahns believe our state is going in the wrong direction, and that’s Spencer Cox’s fault. Since taking office, Cox has flip-flopped more than a pair of sandals. His weird obsession with Donald Trump and his MAGA policies has left Utahns in the cold.
Tonight, Cox offered no explanations for his failure to make housing more affordable, his inability to fully fund education, or his support of taking away Utah voters’ ability to pass ballot initiatives. Maybe he’s too busy fundraising with Donald Trump to address the issues that really matter.
Unlike Cox, Brian King supports real solutions, not political division. As Governor, he’ll address the issues that Utahns care about, without wasting taxpayers’ time and money on pointless culture wars. Brian King’s victory at tonight’s debate proved that he is the only candidate who will put Utah on the right track.”

Utahns Show Out For Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, Hosting Nine Debate Watch Parties in Utah
September 11, 2024, Salt Lake City - As Vice President Kamala Harris stood up to Donald Trump and decisively won last night’s debate, hundreds of Utahns showed their enthusiasm for Vice President Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, achieving record volunteer sign-ups for state and local Democratic candidates. Today, and every day until November 5, Utah Democrats will wake up ready to harness last night’s momentum and hit the ground to engage voters and make the choice in the election clear to all Utahns. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are the only candidates in this race who will fight for us and chart a new way forward.
During the debate, Utahns showed their enthusiasm for Vice President Kamala Harris and Tim Walz as Utah Democrats held nine debate watch parties across the state, including debate watch parties at the University of Utah, Utah Tech University, and Utah State University.
“Last night, Utahns showed their enthusiasm as Vice President Kamala Harris handily won her debate with Donald Trump and laid out her plan to fight for Utahns and to defeat Trump’s Project 2025 agenda. Today, Utahns are harnessing last night’s momentum to continue to put in the work on the ground and win this election,” Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis said. “There are 55 days left until Election Day and the Utah Democratic Party is engaging voters across the state every day. We’re hitting every block, knocking on every door, and sharing Vice President Harris’ vision to fight for our freedoms and lower costs with Utah voters. Utahns are ready to vote for Harris’ vision of a new way forward and reject the lies and Project 2025 agenda of Donald Trump and JD Vance once and for all on November 5.”

Utah Democrats Celebrate Kamala Harris’ Victory In Presidential Debate
September 10, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“Tonight, Disgraced Fraudster Donald Trump laid out his Project 2025 Agenda, which will grant him unprecedented power over American life - from jailing political opponents, to stripping LGBTQ+ Americans of non-discrimination protections, to giving the Federal Government control of women’s healthcare. When asked about the issues that matter, Donald Trump deflected, playing a blame-game with no real solutions for everyday Americans.
Kamala Harris stood for Freedom: Freedom to make decisions about your own body, Freedom to love who you want, and the Freedom to speak out about causes you believe in. She also supported your Freedom from price-gouging, crime, and authoritarianism. Kamala Harris is fighting to lower costs for your family, while Donald Trump is out to give more tax breaks to his billionaire cronies.
Kamala Harris’ complete victory at tonight’s debate confirmed that Utahns have a clear choice: choose Freedom under a Harris Presidency, or more lies, chaos, and government control under Donald Trump and his Project 2025 Agenda.”

What Does Rachelle Morris Have to Hide?
September 9, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis and Salt Lake County Democratic Party Chair Jade Velazquez released the following joint statement today.
“We are disappointed to learn that Rachelle Morris, the Republican nominee for Salt Lake County Council District C has back-tracked on her initial promise to debate Natalie Pinkney, the Democratic nominee. Rachelle has offered no public explanation for her withdrawal, which begs the question: why is she skipping this debate?
Is it that she has something to hide? Or does she know that her record doesn’t stand up in comparison to Natalie’s proven track record of helping families? Whatever the reason, Rachelle’s withdrawal proves that she doesn’t think it’s worth her time to explain her policies to voters. That is not the kind of leadership that Salt Lake County deserves.”

MAGA Extremists Like Burgess Owens And Ken Ivory Want To Decide What Your Children Are Allowed to Read
September 3, 2024, Salt Lake City - UDP Executive Director Thom DeSirant released the following statement today:
“On August 29, MAGA Extremist Ken Ivory invited election-denying Congressman Burgess Owens to celebrate the Utah law that banned 13 books from Public Schools. While Owens spouted MAGA conspiracy theories, another speaker Ivory invited called on the authors of the banned titles to ‘repent.’
It’s weird that a sitting legislator would celebrate a book ban by platforming conspiracy theorists. Ivory and Owens may claim that they support ‘small government,’ but when it comes to what books kids can read, they think that politicians, not parents, should have the final say.
The Republican Party may say they're the party of liberty, but their actions tell a different story. So long as they try to control what your children can and can’t read, they cannot pretend to stand for your freedoms.”

Utah Democrats Condemn GOP Caucus Night Cover-Up
August 30, 2024, Salt Lake City - It was revealed today that the Utah Republican Party colluded with leaders of the Utah Legislature’s Republican Supermajority to avoid a transparent discussion of the mistakes that led to their embarrassing, dysfunctional, and exclusionary Caucus Night on March 5th.
The Utah Republican Party rejected the option to participate in a secure and accessible statewide primary facilitated by the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. This option would have given Utahns the option to vote by mail or in-person. Instead, the Utah GOP opted to run their own presidential caucus, which was dangerously understaffed, disorganized, and left voters with an extremely limited window of time to cast their votes. Less than 10% of registered Republicans cast their ballots. Meanwhile, Utah Democrats voted in a statewide primary that saw higher turnout and no widespread complications.
“The Utah GOP made voting in their presidential primary as difficult as possible, blocking many Utahns from exercising their constitutional right to vote,” UDP Executive Director Thom DeSirant said. “Now, they’re trying to avoid accountability – and the Republican Supermajority is happy to oblige. These are the tactics of crooked politicians, and they have no place in our state. Utahns deserve a transparent government, and they deserve answers.

Utah Democrats Are Fighting For Freedom With Joy
August 22, 2024, Chicago - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“Vice-President Kamala Harris’ Convention Address showed that she is poised to usher our country into a new era: one where Americans of all parties put aside our differences and defend Freedom, joyously looking ahead to the future we will achieve for our children and grandchildren.
Our joy does not blind us to the danger our country faces. Donald Trump, JD Vance, and their MAGA acolytes want to take us back to a time when most Americans did not have Freedom. They want the government in your doctor’s office, controlling what you do with your body. They want the government in our schools, telling you what books your children are allowed to read. They want the government to invade the voting booth, deciding who gets a say in how our country is run. They want the government doing everything except its job: protecting our Freedom and ensuring our country’s future. Nowhere is this truer than Utah, where abortion has been restricted, the government polices bathrooms, and unconstitutional gerrymandering disenfranchises voters.
Nevertheless, we have joy because we know that Donald Trump does not represent most Americans. Freedom is the core value of our country, and millions of Americans will vote to protect it this year. In Utah, we will take our message of joy to the voters, and show crooked politicians that Utahns do not want their Freedom taken away. From Cache Valley to St. George, Utah Democrats are ready to work harder than ever before to elect pro-freedom leaders at the federal, state, and local level. This is the year we reclaim our Freedom, and this is the year we make it clear that we refuse to go back.”

The Republican Supermajority Is Only Interested in Power
August 21, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today.
“The Republican Supermajority claims they want to preserve representative government, but today, they showed that their real priority is holding onto power - no matter how many Utahns they have to steamroll to do so. To stop this power-grab, Utahns of every party must turn out and vote ‘No’ on the proposed amendment this November.”

Tonight, Utah Democrats Voted for Freedom
August 20, 2024, Chicago - The Second Night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention was about one thing: Freedom. Freedom from poverty, freedom to control your body, and the freedom to pursue the American Dream. The Utah Delegation to the Democratic Convention voted unanimously to endorse Kamala Harris because she embodies those freedoms, and because she will defend them every day.
Meanwhile, MAGA Republicans in the Utah Legislature, like Donald Trump and JD Vance, have a weird obsession with taking away Utahns freedoms. Already, they have passed laws policing bathroom usage. They have tried and failed to restrict Utahns’ right to reproductive freedom. Now they are trying to rewrite the state constitution for their own partisan gain: they do not want Utahns to have the freedom to pass ballot initiatives.
Despite that, Utah Democrats have hope because we are on the ground floor of a statewide change. Tonight, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis declared that Utah is “the next battleground state.” As the youngest state in the country and the fastest growing state in the country, Utah is on track to become a swing state within the decade.
“We have an opportunity to shape our future in the next decade. Utahns are sick of the failed policies of the Republican Trifecta in Utah. For too long, one party control has left Utahns without affordable housing, reliable roads, or quality education. Utahns deserve the freedom to elect a truly representative government – but now, the Republican Supermajority is trying to take even that away.
Now is the time for Utahns to get involved in this nationwide movement defending our families, our futures, and our freedoms. Whether you are a Republican, a Democrat, or unaffiliated from any party, all Utahns have a common set of values. We care about our family, we care about our community, and we care about our state. I know that Utahns will join us in electing local candidates that share Kamala Harris’ commitment to freedom: people like Representative Brian King, Caroline Gleich, and Mayor Jenny Wilson.”
Included are Chair Diane Lewis’ remarks from the Nomination Roll Call: “Utah, home of eight tribal nations, the crossroads of the west, the Beehive State, the host of the 2034 Winter Olympics, the youngest and fastest-growing state in the nation, and the next battleground state, proudly casts its 34 votes for Vice-President Kamala Harris!”

The Republican Supermajority Needs to Learn: Power Lies with the Voters, not Power-Hungry Politicians
Salt Lake City, August 20, 2024 - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“The Republican Supermajority in the Utah Legislature have insatiably seized power for themselves for years. They usurped the role of the Executive Branch by passing a law giving the Legislature the ability to call itself into Special Session. They seized control of the voters’ power by unconstitutionally replacing fair congressional maps with their own gerrymandered districts. Once again, the Republican Supermajority is seizing power from voters, all because the Utah Supreme Court stated the obvious: power lies with the voters, not with power-hungry politicians.
The Republican Supermajority is going to extreme lengths to seize power for themselves because they know that Utah is changing. As the fastest growing state and the youngest state in The Union, Utah is positioned to become a swing state in a decade - but rather than allow the voters to decide Utah’s future for themselves, power-hungry politicians are dead-set on propping themselves up.
The framers of our State Constitution created the ballot initiative process as a way for everyday Utahns to check the power of the Legislature. Now, the Supermajority is trying to trick Utahns into changing our state constitution so Republicans can hold onto power. If the Republican Supermajority succeeds in putting their anti-Utahn constitutional amendment on the ballot this November, Utahns must turn out to defeat it. We cannot let power-hungry politicians take away our ability to hold them accountable.”

Utah Democrat Party Files to Join Proposition 4 Lawsuit
August 16, 2024, Salt Lake City - UDP Executive Director Thom DeSirant released the following statement today:
“The Utah Democratic Party has filed a motion to participate in the pending Proposition 4 litigation, League of Women Voters of Utah, et al. v. Utah State Legislature.
The framers of our state constitution were clear: ultimate power lies with the voters, not the legislature. Republicans’ attempt to defy the will of the voters by repealing Proposition 4 and imposing lopsided congressional districts on Utahns is nothing more than a power grab, designed to squash opposition and cut themselves off from the democratic process.
On the same day that the Utah Republican Party published an open letter calling on the Governor and Legislature to disenfranchise Utahns, Utah Democrats are seeking to join this lawsuit to ensure that all Utahns should have an equal say in how they’re governed. Voters should pick their politicians, not the other way around.”

Utah Democrats Honor The Life of Senator Karen Mayne
August 16, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“Utah Democrats have lost one of our greatest leaders. Senator Karen Mayne served the people of West Valley for 15 years, consistently working across the aisle to deliver for her constituents. From her work as the Vice-President of the Utah AFL-CIO to her work in the legislature, she fought for organized labor. She found common ground when it was possible, and stood firmly in opposition when it wasn’t.
Not only have Utah Democrats lost one of our leaders, but I have lost one of my friends. In 2009, Utah Democrats presented Senator Mayne with the Eleanor Roosevelt award, honoring her public service. Senator Mayne will always be remembered as one of our party’s most dedicated public servants. Her example will inspire us to serve the people of Utah the best we can. My thoughts are with Senator Mayne’s friends and family at this time.”

Utah Democrats Welcome Tim Walz to the Harris Ticket
August 6, 2024, Salt Lake City - Vice-President Harris announced today that she has selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Governor Walz is a former teacher, a veteran, and most importantly, a champion for working families.
Here’s how Tim Walz has stood up for Minnesota families:
He lowered the cost of insulin to $35 a month, preventing pharmaceutical companies from taking advantage of Minnesotans.
He signed the largest tax cut in the state’s history, putting more money in the hands of families.
He eliminated junk fees, protecting Minnesotans from corporate cash-grabs.
He passed paid leave so parents could take care of sick family members without risking their jobs.
“Governor Walz is the right choice for Harris’ running mate,” UDP Executive Director Thom DeSirant said. “As the next Vice-President, he will build on his pro-family agenda and fight for the economic well-being of all Americans, not just the privileged few. Walz’s policies appeal to working people - that’s why he was able to flip a solidly red Congressional District in 2006. His electoral strength and rural relatability will help the Harris Campaign defeat Donald Trump this November.”

Don’t Be Fooled: Rachelle Morris is Just Another MAGA Republican
August 5, 2024, Salt Lake City - Rachelle Morris, the Republican Candidate for Salt Lake County Council At-Large, is presenting herself as a moderate Republican, but don’t be fooled: the people propping up her campaign are as MAGA as they come.
Here’s some of the MAGA extremists that want Rachelle Morris on the County Council:
Burgess Owens, Election Denier - Endorsed Rachelle Morris
Burgess Owens voted against certifying the 2020 election, and falsely accused Democrats of having to “cheat” to win elections.
Karianne Lisonbee, Abortion Extremist - Endorsed Rachelle Morris
Lisonbee said that she “trusted women to control [their] intake of semen” while she celebrated a near-total abortion ban coming into effect in Utah.
Dan McCay, Salt Lake County Dismantler - Funded Rachelle Morris
Dan McCay called on the legislature to break up Salt Lake County - the same place that Morris says she wants to represent.
John Johnson, Equity Basher - Endorsed Rachelle Morris
John Johnson said “anti-racism is racism” and led the charge to abolish offices and services at public universities dedicated to assisting minority students.
Kera Birkeland, Bathroom Investigator - Endorsed Rachelle Morris
Birkeland has sponsored multiple anti-LGBTQ+ bills, including a total ban on transgender people using their preferred bathrooms in public buildings.
“It’s weird that Rachelle Morris is pretending to be a moderate while accepting the support of MAGA extremists like Burgess Owens,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis and Salt Lake County Democratic Party Chair Jade Velazquez said in a joint statement. “Who does she want to represent: the people of Salt Lake County, or the MAGA acolytes that are propping up her campaign?”

Utah Democrats Celebrate Court’s Affirmation of Reproductive Rights
August 1, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement in response to the Utah Supreme Court’s Decision in Planned Parenthood Association of Utah v. State of Utah et al.
“The State Supreme Court today affirmed what Utah Democrats have always known to be true: Abortion must remain legal in Utah. This decision is a victory for Utah Families, because the last thing Utahns need to worry about when deciding how to grow their family is government interference.
This decision also defies attempts by MAGA Extremists in the Utah Legislature to restrict Utahns’ constitutional freedoms. Their invasive obsession with controlling people’s healthcare does not represent the people of our state. Voters do not look kindly on attempts to take away their healthcare. In all seven states where abortion was on the ballot after the Dobbs decision, voters protected abortion - even in Republican Ohio, Kansas, and Nebraska.
This fight isn’t over. We know that MAGA extremists like Karianne Lisonbee and Dan McCay will try to undermine this decision. If we want to hold on to today’s victory, we must replace the MAGA extremists in our legislature with pro-choice Democrats.”

Letter of Support and Endorsement for VP Harris from Utah Delegation
We, the Utah Delegation to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, unanimously support the nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris for the Office of President of the United States. We proudly and wholeheartedly stand up against MAGA extremism and support Vice President Harris in the fight to save our democracy.
We know this is a monumental shift in the politics of our country, but no one is better suited than Vice President Harris to lead the Democratic Party through this election. We are thankful that the Utah Democratic Party is hosting a virtual town hall at 6 PM on Monday, July 29 to respond to voters’ questions about developments in this election.
Vice President Harris’s work in the United States Senate and as Attorney General of California prepared her for this role. Her relationships with foreign leaders will make the transition of power that much easier.
Our base is energized. Since announcing her candidacy, the Harris campaign raised over $130 million, millions of which has been from first time donors. Our country is at a crossroads and we have chosen to “Stand with Kamala.”
We further affirm that Vice President Harris is the best candidate to defeat Donald Trump. As she said, “I was a courtroom prosecutor. In those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds: predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say, I know Donald Trump’s type.”
As delegates, we are honored and proud to pledge our votes in this historic campaign to elect the first woman President of the United States.
Signed,
UDP Chair Diane Lewis

As President Biden’s running mate, Vice-President Harris was critical to defeating Donald Trump in the 2020 election, making her the most qualified candidate to take on Donald Trump in this election. Utah Delegation Unanimously Endorses Harris for President
July 22, 2024, Salt Lake City - UDP Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement today:
“I am proud to announce that the Utah Delegation to the Democratic National Convention has unanimously endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris for the Democratic Presidential Nomination.
From prosecuting criminals and investigating predatory banks as Attorney General of California to casting the tie-breaking vote to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, Kamala Harris is the most qualified candidate to lead our country for the next four years. Her background as a criminal prosecutor makes her the perfect candidate to defeat Donald Trump, a convicted felon and twice-impeached ex-President.
With MAGA Republicans attacking abortion rights, LGBTQ+ rights, social security, medicaid, and our country’s democratic institutions, this election is the most important of my lifetime. Vice-President Harris is up to the challenge. In less than 48 hours, she has already built a coalition of young people, women, Latino voters, and Black voters that will carry her campaign to victory.
Utah Democrats are committed to joining Vice-President Harris’ coalition to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda this November.”
