July 21, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, President Joe Biden made the decision to step down from the Presidential Race. The Utah Democratic Party thanks President Biden for his leadership in the Oval Office, and the party remains committed to continuing to work to defeat Donald Trump this November.

“President Biden is one of the most transformational presidents in the history of our country. From leading our country through the COVID-19 pandemic, to supporting democracy abroad, to defending our reproductive freedoms and civil rights, the Biden-Harris Administration has led America through some of its darkest moments
President Biden’s historic 1.7 trillion dollar investment in American infrastructure helped create 11 million new jobs added since he took office. From the American Rescue Plan to the CHIPS Act, President Biden’s legislative agenda has promoted a thriving economy.
In Utah, the Biden-Harris Administration invested 3.5 billion dollars in our infrastructure, including 370 million dollars in expanding rural internet access and 158 million dollars in our airports. President Biden has forgiven 710 million dollars of student debt owed by Utahns. He’s invested tens of millions of dollars in pollution cleanup, protections for native ecosystems, and rural energy projects. Utah is stronger because of President Biden, and the Utah Democratic Party and I are so thankful for his leadership.
It is critical that Democrats remain united against Donald Trump, and that we keep his MAGA agenda from undoing all of President Biden’s accomplishments. We remain dedicated to getting Democrats elected across our cities, our state, and our country.”

In Acceptance Speech, Trump Promotes Division Instead of Unity
July 18, 2024, Salt Lake City - In his rambling keynote address at the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump, rather than call for unity, used his platform to stoke division. From promising “the largest deportation in history,” to falsely claiming there is a “massive invasion at the Southern Border” to repeating his Big Lie that the 2020 election was “stolen,” Donald Trump showed tonight that, if he is elected President, he will return America to the chaos of his first term.
Under the Trump Presidency, parents and children were separated by Trump’s border control. Trump locked America into a trade war with China. He called for and signed a “Muslim Ban” on immigration from Muslim-majority countries. He barred patriotic transgender Americans from serving in the Armed Services. He appointed three MAGA extremists to the Supreme Court and claimed responsibility for the end of Roe v. Wade. By the end of the Trump presidency, millions of Americans had lost their jobs or their lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Trump’s speech proved that he intends to exacerbate the chaos of his first term,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “To prevent further turmoil and division, Democrats must defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA acolytes at the ballot box this November.”

Utahns Deserve Better than JD Vance
July 15, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, Donald Trump announced his running mate: Senator JD Vance. Trump selected Vance because Vance supports the extreme MAGA agenda, and unlike Vice-President Mike Pence, Vance would have refused to certify the results of the 2020 election. Vance has said that:
There should be no exceptions in abortion bans for victims of rape and incest,
Victims of domestic abuse should remain in “violent” marriages,
Social Security and Medicare are “roadblocks” to financial stability.
While the Trump-Vance ticket calls for further restrictions on our basic freedoms, the Biden-Harris Administration is protecting social security and medicare, bringing manufacturing jobs back to America, investing in American energy, and restoring our country’s infrastructure.
“As Utahns, we value women’s rights, federal services, and most importantly, our country’s democratic institutions,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “JD Vance does not share those values. That makes him the wrong candidate for our state and our country.”

Utah Supreme Court Sides with Voters against Hyper-Partisan Gerrymandering
July 11, 2024, Salt Lake City - Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis and Salt Lake County Democratic Party Chair Jade Velazquez released the following joint statement today:
“The Utah Democratic Party and the Salt Lake County Democratic Party celebrate the Utah Supreme Court’s Decision to respect the result of the 2018 Better Boundaries Initiative. Referendums are meant to act as a check on the power of the legislative branch. For too long, MAGA extremists in the Utah legislature have overridden the will of Utah voters for partisan political gain. Today, the courts have reaffirmed that the Republican supermajority cannot override the will of the voters. While the lower court must still rule on whether the state must redraw legislative and congressional districts, today’s ruling is a victory for Utah voters against hyper-partisan gerrymandering and will protect future ballot initiatives from legislative overreach.”

UDP Condemns Project 2025’s Dystopian Vision for America
July 5, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah Democratic Party today condemns Project 2025, a 920-page plan devised by The Heritage Foundation - a MAGA extremist think tank that opposes LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive healthcare, and common sense climate legislation. Project 2025 is meant to be a roadmap for a hypothetical second Trump presidency - and its recommendations, if implemented, would be disastrous for Utah families.
Project 2025 recommends that Trump:
Fire thousands of independent civil servants so they can be replaced by MAGA extremists.
Raise the retirement age and put a cap on Medicare services, threatening the healthcare that millions of retired Americans rely on.
Sign a nationwide abortion ban, and restrict birth control access nationwide.
Dismantle critical agencies that Americans rely on, including the Department of Education.
Put more guns in schools by arming teachers.
Abolish LGBTQ+ Civil Rights protections, effectively making LGBTQ+ Americans second-class citizens.
Two days ago, the Heritage Foundation President said that Project 2025 would usher in a “Second American Revolution,” and said it would only “remain bloodless” if concerned citizens did not oppose his authoritarian plan. President Trump, meanwhile, wrote that he wishes Project 2025 “luck.”
“President Joe Biden is committed to protecting American democracy and defeating Project 2025,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “The only way to stop Trump and his MAGA allies from stripping away our rights is by electing President Biden to a second term.”

MAGA Supreme Court Grants Trump Immunity, Putting Democracy at Risk
July 1, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah Democratic Party today condemns the Supreme Court’s decision to grant Donald Trump immunity for “official acts” he took as President. Not only does this decision block Donald Trump from facing accountability for the January 6 insurrection that he organized, it also puts American Democracy at risk by giving the President free reign to break the law without prosecution.
Under the Conservative Majority’s Ruling, Presidents will not face judicial accountability, even if they sabotage their political rivals or order the assassination of American citizens. The Utah Democratic Party shares the view of Justice Sotomayer, who wrote in her dissent, “Today’s decision to grant former Presidents criminal immunity reshapes the institution of the Presidency. It makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of Government, that no man is above the law.”
“If Donald Trump is allowed back into the oval office, he will use today’s ruling to establish the strongman dictatorship that he promised to create on ‘day one’ of his Presidency,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “With this ruling, Richard Nixon would have been immune to prosecution for Watergate. With this ruling, an increasingly unhinged Trump could do whatever he wants as President, up to and including the assassination of political rivals. This election is no longer a contest between Joe Biden or Donald Trump. It is a contest between Democracy and Authoritarianism.”

Donald Trump’s America was chaotic. Joe Biden’s is Prosperous.
June 27, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, President Joe Biden and Donald Trump shared competing visions for our country. During the debate, Donald Trump once again showed that he does not have the patience, temperament, or acuity to serve as President of the United States. Everything Trump said was counterfactual projection: it was his Presidency, not Joe Biden’s, that resulted in recession, job losses, and political violence. Meanwhile, President Biden shared his vision of America: a place where our rights are protected, and where every American has a fair shot at success.
During the debate, President Biden promised:
Protection of Americans’ healthcare freedoms, including the right to reproductive healthcare.
Support for democratic nations that are facing military threats from dictators like Vladimir Putin.
Support for wounded American veterans.
Continued economic success, building on the record number of jobs he created in his first term.
Meanwhile, ex-President Trump:
Refused to take responsibility for the January 6 riot that ended with police deaths.
Refused to denounce the insurrectionists who stormed the capitol.
Falsely claimed that his recent convictions on 34 felony counts were the result of a Democratic conspiracy.
Promised a massive increase in tariffs, which will result in a higher cost of living for American families.
“Tonight’s debate once again proved that Joe Biden is the only Presidential candidate who stands for Utah families,” UDP Executive Director Thom DeSirant said. “Utahns now have a clear choice: a return to the racism, authoritarianism, and economic turmoil of his first term of the Trump Presidency, or a continuation of the unprecedented economic success, American leadership on the world stage, and institutional support for women’s rights under President Joe Biden.”

Republican Legislators Order State Agencies to Violate Federal Regulations, Putting Transgender Utahns at Risk
June 19, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah Legislature today ordered state agencies to ignore federal Title IX protections for transgender students under the Utah Constitutional Sovereignty Act. The Utah Democratic Party wholeheartedly condemns this action, not only because it puts transgender youth at risk, but also because it is an egregious violation of the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
By unilaterally blocking enforcement of federal law, Republican legislators have embraced the fringe constitutional theory of nullification: the idea that states can usurp the role of federal courts in determining what laws should be enforced. No Federal Court has ever held that states have the power to ignore federal regulation. Republican legislators have opted to ignore this fact, and decided that they, not the courts, get to decide what laws should be followed.
It is incredibly disheartening that Republican legislators have decided to nullify federal protections for transgender youth during Pride Month, which is meant to be a time of celebration for LGBTQ+ Utahns. The Utah Democratic Party stands with transgender Utahns against this unconstitutional resolution.
“Republican Legislators, who so often claim to represent the ideals of our Founding Fathers, have today shown that they would rather cater to anti-LGBTQ+ radicals than uphold constitutional law. Even so-called moderates like Anthony Loubet, Steve Eliason, and Judy Weeks-Rohner have given into transphobic fervor,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “By usurping the role of the courts, the Republican Caucus has betrayed the spirit of federalism and our Constitution.”

The Utah Democratic Party Mourns the Passing of LGBTQ+ Champion Bruce Bastian
June 17, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah Democratic Party mourns the passing of WordPerfect co-founder and legendary LGBTQ+ rights activist Bruce Bastian. Bastian used his fortune to support key service-providers to Utah’s LGBTQ+ community, such as the Utah Aids Foundation, the Human Rights Campaign, and Equality Utah. He was also a supporter of pro-equality causes and organizations, including the Utah Democratic Party.
Bastian further showed his commitment to philanthropy through his support of the arts in Utah, and served as an advisor on the arts to President Obama. He prioritized supporting the arts and people of Utah, especially in times of nationwide economic turmoil.
In 2008, with American support of gay marriage at a low point, Bastian gave a $1 Million Dollar donation to the campaign against Califonia’s infamous Propisition 8, which would have banned same-sex marriage in the state. At a time when being openly gay and pro-LGBTQ+ rights was stigmatized, Bastian was proudly himself - and he made tremendous strides to support other LGBTQ+ people as well.
“Bruce Bastian was a light to the people of our state,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “His example calls on us to do more, especially when it comes to supporting our LGBTQ+ community.”

Utah Republicans Vote Against Right to Contraception, Betraying Utah Families
June 5, 2024 - Today, Republican Senator Mike Lee voted against codifying the right to contraception, while Senator Mitt Romney abstained. Senators Lee and Romney have shown that they would rather give in to pressure from far-right extremists than protect the basic rights that Utahns deserve.
Contraception is at risk. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas stated that the court should “reconsider” the ruling that guaranteed the federal right to contraception. Republicans in Nevada, Arizona, and Virginia have either blocked efforts to protect contraception or tried to restrict it. Families have every reason to be concerned - but rather than address those concerns, Senate Republicans have condescendingly written off women’s fears as the result of Democratic “scare tactics.”
If Senators Lee and Romney truly support the right to contraception, then they should act to protect it. Instead, Republicans insist that Utah women have nothing to fear, all while holding their basic rights hostage.
“Make no mistake,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said, “Senators Lee and Romney have given into far-right partisan pressure when they could have protected the rights of their constituents. Their refusal to do so will only harm Utah families.”

Rep. Lisonbee Doubles Down on False Anti-DEI Claims on Sen. John Johnsons Podcast, Leaving Utahns Behind
June 4, 2024, Salt Lake City - On May 29, Representative Karianne Lisonbee doubled down on her false claim that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs are harmful to Utah students. In a podcast with Senator John Johnson, Lisonbee claimed that HB 261, the DEI ban passed by Republican legislators this year, was necessary to increase beneficial educational outcomes. Lisonbee also co-opted the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to support her counterfactual argument. There is no substantive evidence for Lisonbee’s claims. In fact, DEI programs at Utah universities have been shown to improve outcomes for minority students.
Utah Valley University’s DEI programs resulted in increases in retention rates for women students (6% increase), Latino students (10% increase), Pacific Islanders (23% increase), and Veterans (37%).
The University of Utah Health Department’s DEI programs resulted in a 40% makeup of family medicine residents from diverse backgrounds, when it had been 0 in 2017.
SLCC achieved its goal of having its student body reflect the demographics of Salt Lake County, and enrolled the highest number of Latinos out of any university in the state.
Rather than work to support these beneficial programs, House Republicans banned them. Meanwhile, Rep. Katy Hall, the sponsor of HB 261, admitted that she did not have data to support her claim that DEI practices were harmful to students. Republicans in Utah’s Legislature have decided that DEI efforts must mean that white students are being left behind, even though the opposite is true: UVU saw an overall 24% increase in graduation rates during the tenure of its DEI programs.
The Utah Democratic Party shares the view of Bernice A. King, the CEO of The King Center and the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., that “people using ‘not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character’ to deter discussion of, teaching about, and protest against racism are not students of the comprehensive MLK.”
“There is no evidence to suggest that House Republicans’ anti-DEI efforts will improve student achievement,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “Rather than waste Utahns’ time and tax dollars on banning successful programs, House Republicans should focus on issues that actually affect Utahns’ everyday lives.”

Senator Nate Blouin speaks at White House Summit on Energy
May 31, 2024, Salt Lake City: On May 28, 2024, Utah State Senator Nate Blouin attended a summit on electric grid modernization at the White House. Senator Blouin spoke on a panel with officials from across the country about the importance of renewable energy sources and investment in energy infrastructure.
At the summit, the Biden-Harris administration announced the Federal-State Modern Grid Deployment Initiative, which is designed to improve the distribution of clean, affordable power. This initiative comes after the Biden-Harris administration announced $286,100,000 in public funding to support Utah’s clean energy infrastructure. It is clear that President Biden continues to prioritize the success of Utah families.
“I’m grateful for the efforts of the Biden-Harris administration to prioritize energy policy that will deliver a stronger, cleaner, and more affordable grid,” Senator Blouin said. “Grid Enhancing Technologies address the need to expand the nation’s transmission capacity quickly and cost-effectively to meet our growing energy demand and support an expanding economy.”

Biden-Harris Administration protecting Utahns from wildfires
May 20, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah Democratic Party celebrates the Biden-Harris Administration’s investment of $5.5 Million to protect Utah homes, businesses, and families from wildfires, per a May 15 announcement. This funding is made possible by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The funding is allocated to the Salt Lake City Fire Department, Rim to Rim Restoration, and the Shivwits Band of Paiute Indians, and will be used to prevent wildfires as well as prepare comprehensive wildfire responses. The funding will benefit communities in Salt Lake City, Moab, and the Shivwits Reservation.
“Wildfires have long been a threat to Utah families,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “President Biden is taking a proactive approach to natural disaster prevention that will protect Utahns.”

May 17, 2024, Salt Lake City, - The Utah Democratic Party announced today that at 7 PM on May 21st, candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for CD2 will address the public at a virtual town hall moderated by former UDP Chair Jeff Merchant. Biden-Harris administration investing in Utah waterfowl
May 10, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, the Utah Democratic Party celebrates the Biden Administration's $3,000,000 grant to Ducks Unlimited for the enhancement of 7,439 acres of aquatic bed wetlands in the Great Salt Lake and lower Bear River ecosystems. The grant comes with a proposed $6,113,637 match from partners including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Utah Department of Natural Resources.
After suffering historic drought, Utahns have reason to be concerned about conservation. Not only does a lack of water threaten Utah’s economy, it also threatens the ecosystems and wildlife that makes Utah a hub of outdoor recreation. The Department of Fish and Wildlife Services, under the direction of the Biden administration, is working to protect the environment that Utahns love, with the help of trusted partners like Ducks Unlimited.
This grant follows several other investments by the Biden-Harris Administration in Utah’s environment, including a $37,800,000 investment in legacy pollution sites cleanup. “Joe Biden knows that Utahns deserve a healthy environment, with clean water and abundant wildlife,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. “That’s one reason why we’re proud to support him in this election.”

Democratic State Central Committee members in CD-2 will gather virtually to nominate a candidate for the upcoming special election
WHAT: The Utah Democratic Party has received notice from the Lieutenant Governor's office that the Democratic nominee in the 2nd Congressional District (CD-2) has withdrawn from the race. According to State Law, the Utah Democratic Party State Central Committee has the responsibility of filling this vacancy and deciding who will appear as the Democratic Nominee.
The filing period will be open for two weeks, beginning today, May 2nd, and concluding on May 15th at 5:00 p.m. When the list of candidates becomes available, names of the potential nominees will be published on the UDP website.
The Utah Democratic Party’s State Central Committee members will convene on May 25th at 10 AM to meet, hear from candidates, and ultimately elect a replacement nominee for CD-2. The rules for the nomination process will be provided to all members of the State Central Committee, candidates, and posted on the UDP website

2024 Utah Democratic Convention Results
April 27, 2024, Cottonwood Heights - Today, the Utah Democratic State Convention occurred, as thousands of elected delegates gathered at Cottonwood High School to select the Democratic nominees for elected office. Delegates voted in the districts in which they are registered to vote using a ranked-choice voting system.
Constitutional Revisions
The following proposal to revise the party constitution was accepted by 95.47% of the Delegates.

As Caroline Gleich received over 55% of the votes in the first round, she will advance to the general election as the Democratic nominee.

As Katrina Fallick-Wang received over 55% of the votes, she will advance to the general election as the Democratic nominee.

As Rudy Bautista received over 55% of the votes, he will advance to the general election as the Democratic nominee.

As Claudia Bigler received over 55% of the votes, she will advance to the general election as the Democratic nominee.
Utah House District 23
Hoang Nguyen - 39 votes
Jeff Howell - 29 votes
As both candidates submitted signatures, they will advance to the Democratic primary.

Clare Collard - 530 votes
Audrey Evans - 136 votes
Susan Merrill - 159 votes
As Clare Collard received a majority of the votes in the second round, she will begin serving as the new National Committeewoman on August 23, 2024.

Matthew Fatuesi - 40 votes
Brad Townley - 486 votes
Steve Merrill - 152 votes
Antonio Esquibel - 120 votes
As Brad Townley received a majority of the votes in the third round, he will begin serving as the new National Committeeman on August 23, 2024.

April 24, 2024, Salt Lake City - Today, the Utah Democratic Party launched UtahForBiden.com, a website dedicated to sharing what President Biden has done for Utah families. UtahForBiden.com will also help Utahns become involved in supporting Democratic candidates for local, state, and federal office.
The Utah Democratic Party knows that, unlike Donald Trump, President Biden is committed to coming through for Utah families. From lowering energy costs, to canceling student debt, to investing in our infrastructure, President Biden continues to come through for Utah families.
UDP is committed to working with the Biden-Harris campaign to strengthen Democrats across Utah. “Every state, and every race, should be contested. That’s how we’ll strengthen the Democratic Party in Utah and across the country,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said.
