Biden-Harris Administration Supports Rural Utahns with $1.8 Million in REAP Benefits
April 22, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah Democratic Party celebrates the Biden-Harris Administration’s April 1st announcement that 1.8 Million Dollars of Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) funding will be allocated to fund 17 projects across Cache, Iron, Millard, Rich, San Juan, Summit, Wasatch, and Wayne counties.
The projects that will be funded include:
$56,318 to help a Millard County Ranch purchase and install a solar array, which will completely replace their energy use and save over $3,400 annually.
$83,812 for a small business in Wayne County to purchase and install a solar array, which will completely replace their energy use and save over $5,200 annually.
$245,432 for an RV Park in San Juan County to purchase and install a solar array, which will completely replace their energy use and save over $17,651 annually.
$71,775 for a hardware store in San Juan County to purchase and install a solar array, which will completely replace their energy use and save over $4,395 annually.
These investments, directed by President Biden, will serve to reduce Utahns annual energy costs by an average of 78%. “This funding confirms that President Biden is the only Presidential candidate who stands for rural Utahns,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said.

President Biden invests in Utah infrastructure
On April 5, 2024, a delegation of Utah leaders, including UDP Vice-Chair Oscar Mata, House Minority Leader Angela Romero, former State Senator Scott Howell, and former Democratic Congressman Ben McAdams, visited Washington D.C. to be briefed by the Biden administration on the investments Utah has received under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, which President Biden has used to invest 3.5 Billion Dollars in Utah’s future. Here’s some of the ways President Biden is building up Utah:
Expanding High-Speed Internet Access: Under President Biden, Utah has received 370.7 Million Dollars to improve internet access for Utah families and businesses.
Funding UTA: Under President Biden, the Utah Transit Authority received 20 Million Dollars to buy 60 new light-rail vehicles
Expanding Airports: Under President Biden, Utah Airports received 158.2 Million Dollars in Federal funding.
Cleaning Up Our Environment: Under President Biden, the Federal Government is investing 37.8 Million Dollars to clean up legacy pollution sites in Utah.
“From investing in our environment to expanding internet access for Utah families, President Biden’s administration is good for Utah,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said. UDP is committed to supporting President Biden because we know that while Republican politicians waste tax dollars on frivolous lawsuits and impose draconian measures on vulnerable Utahns, President Biden comes through for Utah families.

Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury to address Utah State Democratic Convention
April 16, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah Democratic Party announced Wednesday, April 10, that Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) is traveling to Salt Lake City to address Utah Democratic Delegates at the State Democratic Convention on April 27th, 2024, at Cottonwood High School.
Congresswoman Stansbury, as the first woman representing District 28 in the New Mexico House of Representatives, tackled conservation, climate change, and the pandemic. Her success in that role led to her election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2021, where she’s addressed food insecurity, disparities in healthcare, and climate change. “Congresswoman Stansbury shares the Utah Democratic Party’s pro-family values and has done the work to ensure families have the resources they need,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said.
Congresswoman Stansbury will also be addressing supporters at the annual Taylor & Mayne Award Dinner on April 26th, located at the Ken Garff Scholarship Club. Additionally, UDP Chair Diane Lewis will present organizer and activist Terri Goodall with the Todd Taylor Democratic Gains Award, and former Utah State Representative and Union Leader Liz Weight with the Ed Mayne Labor Champion Award. Tickets to this event are available at https://www.utahdemocrats.org/2024-taylor-mayne.

UDP mourns the passing of Mayor Ted Wilson
April 11, 2024, Salt Lake City - The Utah State Democratic Party issued the following statement regarding the passing of former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson:
The Utah State Democratic Party mourns the passing of Ted Wilson. As Mayor, his work included expanding the Salt Lake City airport, managing city creek’s flooding, and creating Salt Lake City’s current Council system. He is responsible for cementing Salt Lake City’s place as a thriving home for Utah families and businesses. His commitment to education as a member of the University of Utah’s faculty lives on in his students, and his humanitarian work will impact the lives of people around the world for years to come.
In his campaigns for Senator and Governor, Mayor Wilson championed Democratic values and strengthened the Democratic coalition. “Mayor Wilson’s legacy lives on in the work of Democrats across Utah. Our party would not be where it is today without him,” UDP Chair Diane Lewis said.
May we live up to Mayor Wilson’s example. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this time.

Donald Trump Takes Credit for Extreme Abortion Bans Like Utah’s
April 8, 2024, Salt Lake City: Today, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement on Donald Trump’s abortion statement:
“Donald Trump said it himself: Trump is ‘proudly the person responsible’ for overturning Roe v. Wade and the extreme abortion bans across the country like Utah’s Trigger Ban that, if allowed to take effect, will put women’s lives at risk, threaten doctors with prosecution for doing their jobs, and jeopardize access to fertility treatments for families trying to get pregnant. It is because of Donald Trump that Utahns are currently suffering from an 18-week-abortion ban, and it is because of Donald Trump that Utah’s Republican Politicians are trying to interfere with the personal medical decisions of Utah families.
Thanks to the hard work of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah and the ACLU of Utah, Utah’s courts have temporarily blocked our state’s inhumane near-total abortion ban. However, as Utahns who value medical freedom, we must remain wary of another Trump presidency. People living in states with near-total abortion bans like Utah’s trigger ban have faced medical complications, financial burdens, and criminal and civil prosecution, all because they tried to access medically-necessary reproductive healthcare. This has not stopped Trump or the Republican party from further oppressing the ability of families to access the full range of reproductive health services: Trump has repeatedly bragged about cruelly involving the government in personal reproductive health decisions across the country and even said women should be punished for seeking reproductive health care. Make no mistake: These inhumane and dangerous bans aren’t enough for Trump, and his extreme MAGA allies are pushing a plan that would allow him to rip away access to reproductive care in every single state, including Utah, with or without Congress.
With so much at stake this November, Utahns know that President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates who support the right to choose and will protect their freedoms.”
Trump is bragging about ending Roe v. Wade, and he would sign a national abortion ban if it came to his desk:
Without Trump ending Roe v. Wade, Utahns would not be living under constant threat of a near-total abortion ban, nor would Utah’s 18-week-ban be in effect.
Trump has repeatedly boasted that he’s “killed” reproductive freedom, saying proudly, “I'm the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade.”
Trump claims credit for every extreme abortion ban passed thanks to his work in overturning Roe v. Wade, and said he was “proud” to have terminated abortion rights.
Trump has long supported a nationwide abortion ban, even saying in a speech to his MAGA supporters that “there of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”
Trump and MAGA Republicans want to roll back reproductive freedoms even further. Trump has even gone so far as to call for punishing women who have abortions.
Trump’s MAGA allies are planning to ban abortion in all 50 states, with or without Congress.

As SCOTUS Hears Mifepristone Case, Utah Democrats Slam Trump’s Efforts to Ban Abortion Nationwide
As SCOTUS Hears Mifepristone Case, Utah Democrats Slam Trump’s Efforts to Ban Abortion Nationwide
SALT LAKE CITY, March 26, 2024 — As the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments in a case that could ban medication abortion across the country and severely limit the access to critical reproductive care for millions of women, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement:
“Today's Supreme Court hearing is a stark reminder that Donald Trump and his MAGA allies are using every avenue possible to ban abortion nationwide and devastate Utahn’s reproductive freedom. This case could strip away access to medication abortion everywhere in this country, including Utah, which would be the biggest step toward their extreme goal since Trump overturned Roe v. Wade. Utahns know that reproductive rights are on the ballot in November, and the only way to protect Utah’s freedoms is to send President Biden and Vice President Harris back to the White House.”
While Trump and MAGA Republicans are working to ban abortion access nationwide, President Biden and Vice President Harris will protect a woman’s right to choose:
● Calling on Congress to codify the protections of Roe into law, restoring rights women relied on for nearly 50 years.
● Standing by the FDA’s evidence-based approval of mifepristone — and the Biden-Harris administration will continue to defend the FDA’s independent, expert authority to review, approve, and regulate a wide range of prescription drugs.
● Fighting to ensure access to emergency medical care.
● Strengthening patient privacy and access to contraception.
● Supporting a woman’s right to travel for medical care.
● Promising to veto a national abortion ban.

Utah Republicans Release Budget Pushing Trump’s Plan To Threaten Health Care, Social Security and Reproductive Freedoms
SALT LAKE CITY, March 21, 2024 — Following Donald Trump’s agenda for another term, 80% of House Republicans – including Blake Moore, Burgess Owens, and John Curtis – released a budget yesterday that would gut Social Security and Medicare, rip away health care, ban abortion, and threaten access to IVF nationwide. In response, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement:
“MAGA Republicans are showing us exactly what could happen if Donald Trump gets another term: a national ban on abortion, threats to IVF access, health care protections ripped away from thousands of Utahns with preexisting conditions, and Social Security and Medicare slashed for Utah seniors. This is Trump’s plan for Utah, and Republicans like Blake Moore, Burgess Owens, and John Curtis, are laying out their extremely unpopular MAGA blueprint line by line. The GOP’s catastrophic plan to raise costs and destroy our freedoms emphasizes just how much is at stake in this election, and this November, Utahns will make sure Trump and MAGA Republicans never get the chance to turn this budget into reality.”

Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement in response to President Biden’s State of the Union address
SALT LAKE CITY, March 7, 2024 — “Tonight, President Biden once again demonstrated his dedication to safeguarding the well-being of Utahns. The difference between President Biden’s aspirations for our nation's future and Trump’s plan to drag us back to 2020 couldn't be more apparent. President Biden is determined to improve the lives of our state’s families, while Donald Trump's primary focus seems to be degrading our most sacred values: liberty, equality, and justice.
As Donald Trump, currently dealing with 91 criminal charges, doubles down on his pledge to be a ‘dictator on day one’ and make the wealthy rich off the back of hardworking Utahns, America’s President has remained committed to defending democracy and building our economy from the bottom up and the middle out — while making sure the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share.
“Utahns understand the stakes in this election and know that the only way to keep building on all the progress we’ve made is reelecting President Biden and Vice President Harris to a second term in November.”

"A PURE WASTE OF TIME:" UTAH REPUBLICAN CAUCUS NIGHT DEVOLVES INTO CHAOS
SALT LAKE CITY, March 5, 2024 — In stark contrast to the chaos of the Utah Republican Party’s presidential preference poll tonight, Democrats across the state overwhelmingly showed their support for President Biden in a secure, accessible, and efficient vote-by-mail primary election.
Thom DeSirant, Executive Director of the Utah Democratic Party, stated, "The dysfunction of the Republican caucus is a total embarrassment. Instead of opting to participate in a secure and accessible process through a state-run primary, like the Utah Democratic Party did, the Utah GOP chose to shut out voter participation, so it should be no surprise that their caucuses devolved into disorganized chaos.”
Voters showing up to participate in the Utah GOP’s closed presidential preference poll tonight were met with long lines, broken registration systems, and a general sense of disorder and confusion. The sheer incompetence displayed by the Utah Republican Party mirrors the chaos that Donald Trump, their presumptive nominee, threatens to bring to America if he is sent back to the White House this November.
While Utah Democrats prioritize inclusivity and transparency in the electoral process, the Utah Republican Party's caucus night debacle serves as a cautionary tale of what awaits if their divisive and inept leadership is allowed to prevail.

UTAH DEMOCRATIC PARTY CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT BIDEN ON PRIMARY VICTORY
SALT LAKE CITY, March 5, 2024 — Tonight, following the close of polls and the release of initial results showing an overwhelming victory for President Joe Biden in Utah’s Super Tuesday Democratic primary contest, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement:
“Congratulations to President Biden and Vice President Harris on their overwhelming victory in tonight’s Utah primary. These results show what I’ve been hearing on the ground every day: Democrats are fired up and ready to re-elect the Biden-Harris ticket in November. We simply cannot afford to have Donald Trump and his MAGA extremist movement back in the White House.
We know what’s at stake in this election: our personal freedoms, our economy, and our democracy. Tonight, thousands of Utah Democrats showed that they are ready to fight for our historic progress and send Joe Biden and Kamala Harris back to the White House in November.”

MAGA Republican Burgess Owens Pushed to Restrict IVF Access, Reproductive Freedom
SALT LAKE CITY, February 26, 2024 — Utah families have been bracing themselves as they witness IVF being paused in Alabama because Donald Trump intentionally appointed three Supreme Court justices who would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. What’s happening in Alabama is a direct result of the attacks Trump and Utah Republicans have been making for years on the most personal decisions a family can make, from contraception to IVF. Case in point: Rep. Burgess Owens cosponsored the Life at Conception Act just last year – an extreme bill that would severely restrict reproductive freedoms for Utah women.
“Let me be clear: The Alabama Supreme Court’s decision putting IVF in jeopardy was a direct consequence of Donald Trump’s presidency – and if he’s elected to another term, Utah could be next,” said Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis. “MAGA Republicans, including Burgess Owens, have already tried to restrict Utahns’ reproductive rights with no protections for IVF by co-sponsoring the Life at Conception Act. From birth control to IVF, the GOP has tried to insert itself into the most personal decisions a family can make – and they can’t run from that record. With freedoms hanging in the balance this November, Utahns know that the only way to protect the freedom to make decisions about their families and future is by rejecting Trump and MAGA Republicans at the ballot box.”
MAGA House Republicans support dangerous legislation that would rip away reproductive rights:
Just last year, Rep. Burgess Owens co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act, which would completely restrict reproductive freedom without any protections for IVF.
Donald Trump and his MAGA allies want to take this anti-freedom agenda even further:
Trump has bragged about restricting the reproductive freedom of millions of women, saying proudly that “I'm the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade.”
Trump’s extremist allies are already laying out plans for a nationwide abortion ban, attacks on same-sex marriage, and restrictions on contraception.
Trump has long supported a nationwide abortion ban, even saying in a speech to his MAGA supporters that “there of course remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. And it’s very important.”
Trump has even gone so far as to call for punishing women who have abortions.
Trump has claimed credit for every extreme abortion ban passed thanks to his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, and said he was ‘proud’ to have terminated abortion rights.
And Trump’s close allies have plans to effectively ban abortion nationwide without the help of Congress. Trump’s allies could even attempt to prosecute doctors and patients for sending or receiving abortion medication in the mail.
According to a poll conducted by the firm of Trump’s own longtime advisor, 86% of voters support IVF.
Trump appointed an anti-IVF judge to a lifetime federal judicial appointment. He even added her to a list of potential Supreme Court picks.
The Trump administration proposed a rule that would have allowed health care workers to refuse IVF to women who were single, LGBTQ+ or in an interfaith relationship.
Trump’s White House and campaign hosted the Alabama Supreme Court chief justice who ruled to restrict access to IVF.
Trump’s Supreme Court appointee Amy Coney Barrett supported calls to protect life from fertilization and refused to answer questions about criminalizing IVF.

Utah Democratic Party Statement On Gov. Cox Sending National Guard And Troopers To Promote Political Agenda On Southern Border
SALT LAKE CITY, February 9, 2024 — This morning, Governor Spencer Cox announced that he’s sending members of the Utah National Guard and law enforcement to the southern border as part of the MAGA Republican party’s ongoing political grandstanding on immigration.
Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement in response:
“This is just the latest in a long line of recent actions by Spencer Cox that prove that he is more interested in playing political games than getting important things done for the state of Utah. No matter how hard he tries to falsely justify his grandstanding through fear-mongering, the fact is that we have far more pressing issues facing our state that we should be devoting time, energy, and money to than posturing in an effort to please Donald Trump. Once again, if Cox and his Republican friends are so concerned about the border, they should be supporting the bipartisan proposal negotiated by President Biden and Senate Republicans. We deserve a governor who is more focused on doing work for the people of Utah than building his own personal brand on the national stage or protecting his own political ambitions.”

Cox Joins The Culture Wars: Utah Democrats Call Out The Governor For Turning His Back On Vulnerable Communities
SALT LAKE CITY, January 30, 2024 — This evening, Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed into law two out-of-touch culture war bills, HB 261, which bans diversity, equity, and inclusion programs from public institutions, and HB 257, which restricts transgender Utahns from using bathrooms in public facilities that are in line with their gender identity.
Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement in response:
“Spencer Cox rushing to make these divisive bills some of the first he signs this year is a perfect demonstration of the kind of governor he has become. Rather than placing common sense and good public policy over red meat culture wars, he has completely caved to the right wing of the Republican party in an effort to keep his political career alive.
“While Governor Cox might think it’s no big deal to throw vulnerable Utahns under the bus to secure his party’s nomination, there are real consequences to these culture wars, and real impacts which will be felt by communities of color and the LGBTQ community. We deserve a governor who will work for the better of ALL Utahns, and that’s why we’re working to defeat Spencer Cox and elect Brian King in November.”
We’ve seen a remarkable shift from Cox’s previous positions on these issues over the last few years:
In January 2021, as one of his first official acts, Governor Cox joined several other Republican leaders in signing the Utah Compact on Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, which said: “We advance solutions to racial ills by listening and creating policies that provide equal opportunity and access to education, employment, housing, and healthcare.”
In March 2022, Governor Cox vetoed a ban on trans kids participating in school sports, saying, “Rarely has so much fear and anger been directed at so few.”
His pivot comes as he has faced mounting criticism from Republican activists, and as he now faces two primary challengers from the right-wing of his party.

Utah Democrats Stand With Transgender Utahns Against Discriminatory Political Attacks
SALT LAKE CITY, January 19, 2024 — Following the passage by the Utah House of Representatives of Rep. Kera Birkeland’s House Bill 257, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement:
“The latest anti-transgender bill passed by the House, which bans members of the transgender community from using public restrooms corresponding with their gender identity, is a shameful, discriminatory attack on a community that is already extremely marginalized and vulnerable. Unfortunately, despite trans people making up just 1% of our state’s population, Republican legislators have spent a massively disproportionate amount of time legislating their basic human rights.
“Not only does House Bill 257 perpetuate harmful and dangerous stereotypes about transgender Utahns, it is also not based on any facts or data, which the sponsor herself admitted. Repeatedly using vulnerable communities as a political punching bag, as the supermajority has done, is shameful and self-serving, and Utahns will hold extreme Republicans accountable for their votes in November.”

“A Betrayal Of Our Utah Values:” Utah & Salt Lake County Democrats Call Out Utah Republicans For Self-Serving Attacks On Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion
SALT LAKE CITY, January 17, 2024 — This afternoon, the House Education Committee debated, and ultimately passed, House Bill 261: “Equal Opportunity Initiatives”, a bill which would eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion departments from all public institutions, and which would ban those institutions from considering anti-racism, racial privilege, or systemic discrimination in hiring.
This bill is directly oppositional to the Utah Compact on Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, which was signed in December 2020 by dozens of state leaders, including high-profile Republicans like then-Governor Herbert, then-Lieutenant Governor Cox, Senate President Adams, and more.
The Compact promised to “…advance solutions to racial ills by listening and creating policies that provide equal opportunity and access to education, employment, housing and health care,” which is exactly what DEI programs exist to do. The fact that Republican leaders have now completely reversed course (Governor Cox even called DEI hiring practices “bordering on evil”) is a searing indictment of just how far they will go to appease the right-wing of their base, throwing communities of color under the bus for their own political gain.
“Three years ago, state and community leaders of both parties came together in a commitment to fight back against systemic racism. Unfortunately, House Bill 261 represents a major deviation from that commitment, and a huge step backwards for our state,” said Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis. “These out-of-touch culture wars are a betrayal of our Utah values: love for our neighbors, determination to allow everyone a fair shot at success, and embracing, not ignoring, our differences.”
“This bill will have drastic ramifications for years to come. This Republican-led legislation threatens jobs and explicitly targets minority and underrepresented communities, including but not limited to, Black, Latino, Women, Indigenous, and LGBTQ groups in Utah,” said Salt Lake County Democratic Party Chair Jade Velazquez. “I’m most concerned about the impact of this legislation on students of color. Utahns must stand united against this reprehensible bill and amplify our voices for what is right for our community. Democrats stand with communities of color and recognize that their lived experiences matter. We are asking all Utahns to please take action before it is too late and call on Governor Cox and his Republican colleagues to unequivocally denounce this bill.”

With Utah GOP In Disarray, Utah Democrats Announce 2024 Coordinated Campaign, “Organize Utah”
SALT LAKE CITY, December 19, 2023 – Today, the Utah Democratic Party announced the official launch of “Organize Utah,” its 2024 coordinated campaign. This unified effort is the first statewide Democratic coordinated campaign since 2016. By contrast, the extremists in the Utah Republican Party continue to show their dysfunction and disorganization, with bitter primary fights once again expected for the U.S. Senate, Congress, Governor, and more.
The launch of Organize Utah, which is made up of candidates, county parties, and other like-minded organizations, signals that Utah Democrats are ready to hit the ground running next year and make unprecedented investments across the state. Organize Utah will support Democratic candidates up and down the ballot through voter registration, direct voter contact, targeted get-out-the-vote efforts, paid media, and more.
“2024 is a crucial year for our party, and that’s why I am so excited about the launch of Organize Utah. Working hand-in-hand with our partners across the state, we are ready to make historic investments at every level of the ballot,” said Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis.
“While Utah Republicans’ vicious infighting and petty political games continue, Utah Democrats are more unified and organized than ever. We believe that not only will our early planning and preparation lead to Democratic gains next November, but that we are also laying the groundwork for success in the years to come.”

Utah Democratic Party Statement On 2023 General Election
SALT LAKE CITY, November 21, 2023 –– Tonight, following the close of voting for the 2023 general election, Utah Democratic Party Chair Diane Lewis released the following statement:
“This year, we had over 100 Democrats all across the state step up to run for local office, and we have been extremely proud of the hard work and long hours they have put in. Running for office is difficult, rewarding work, and I want to personally thank and congratulate all of our candidates, no matter the final result of their election.
“This year, we also had an election in CD-2 that nobody was planning on. Since announcing her candidacy in June, Sen. Kathleen Riebe has been a fantastic candidate, and she has put in the work in every corner of the district, carrying the banner of our party and motivating voters of all political affiliations who are looking for a new kind of representation. While we don’t have any results yet, I want to thank Sen. Riebe for her dedication and congratulate her on running a truly inspiring campaign. Win or lose, she has contributed significantly to the long, important work of building the Utah Democratic Party across the state, and we are incredibly grateful to her and her team and proud of what they have accomplished.”
