SALT LAKE CITY, UT — For years, Donald Trump and his allies have attacked election officials, spread baseless conspiracy theories about voter fraud, and tried to convince Americans that elections are rigged whenever Republicans lose. Now, the Trump administration is escalating its involvement in elections by deploying federal monitors to polling places across the country, including Utah.
Utahns should never have to walk into a polling place wondering whether their own government is there to protect their rights or undermine them. Our elections belong to the people who participate in them, not politicians looking for new ways to cast doubt on the results.
“Donald Trump does not get to spend years attacking our elections and then use the power of the federal government to intimidate the people who participate in them,” said Utah Democratic Party Chair Brian King. “Utahns are not criminals, our elections are not Trump’s to control, and our polling places are not his to weaponize. Every eligible voter has the right to cast a ballot without fear of retaliation or intimidation.”
If this administration thinks it can use its power to scare Utahns into submission, it has badly underestimated the people of this state. The Utah Democratic Party will always stand against federal overreach and defend every Utahn’s right to vote freely, without fear or interference.
