Statement from Chair Brian King on Washington County’s Refusal to Adopt Court-Approved Congressional Map
Washington County commissioners just voted to ignore a lawful, court-approved congressional map because they don’t like the outcome. That’s not principled leadership; it’s political obstruction. Utah voters demanded an end to extreme gerrymandering, the courts upheld that demand, and now a handful of local officials are trying to veto democracy by tantrum. Counties do not get to nullify state law or judicial rulings when it’s inconvenient.
This kind of behavior erodes public trust and tells voters that the rules only apply when those in power approve of them. Democrats will continue to stand with Utahns who believe in fair maps, fair elections, and the basic idea that no one is above the law - especially not county commissioners.
